Greg Macpherson
Democrat for State Senate, District 19

Who I Am

I was born in Corvallis and raised on a dairy farm in rural Linn County. I attended a two-room country schoolhouse and high school in Albany. I earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a law degree from Georgetown Law School.

Returning to Oregon, I had a career as an employee benefits lawyer representing employers and employee trusts. I raised twin children, volunteering at their schools and coaching their basketball and soccer teams. I’m married to Tory Macpherson. I recently left law practice to devote my time to making the world a better place.

Frustrated by the lack of action on environmental protection and school funding in Salem, in 2002 I ran for a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives, representing lower SW Portland and Lake Oswego. I was elected and served there from 2003 to 2009. In my last term I chaired the House Judiciary Committee and co-chaired a joint committee in crafting a ballot measure that today continues to protect farm and forest lands from rampant development.

From 2009 to 2017 I was a member of the Land Conservation and Development Commission, serving as chair for the past four years. I oversaw a statewide planning program that is largely responsible for keeping Oregon the beautiful place we enjoy today.

I have taken on leadership roles for many civic organizations. These include the boards of the Lake Oswego School District Foundation and the Oregon League of Conservation Voters. Earlier in 2017 I completed service on the board of the City Club of Portland, where I was President in 2015 and 2016. My civic contributions have been recognized with the Lake Oswego Community Leader of the Year award in 2007 and OBA’s Statesman of the Year award in 2009.

Among my hobbies is playing the bagpipes. I have marched in the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade seven times as a member of the Clan Macleay bagpipe band.
